Dr. Bastian providing emergency obstetric training.

Dr. Bastian training hospital staff in medical education skills.

Basic obstetric ultrasound course

Our basic obstetric ultrasound course* is specifically developed for Zambian maternal health care workers: resident and specialized gynecologists, midwives and general doctors that are involved in maternal health. It will provide the participant knowledge and practical skills in basic obstetric ultrasound like assessment of the fetal well-being, position of the fetus and placenta, fetal growth and performing a proper early dating scan, amongst other things.

The course consists of three interactive training sessions on real life patients, after which the participant needs to put his/her newly gained skills in practice at his/her own workplace. This will be accommodated with an interactive follow-up with the help of a logbook. An entry exam and a considerate amount of self-study are also part of the requirements. After completion of the course the participant will receive an HPCZ recognized certificate. He/she will then be able to face most challenges that their field of work will bring with regards to obstetric ultrasound.

Emergency obstetric trainings

Our emergency obstetric trainings are tailor-made to the participant’s needs and specifically developed for the Zambian maternal health care setting. Resident and specialized gynecologists, midwives and general doctors engaged with maternal health will benefit from these trainings even as a refresher. Possible training modules are: management of PPH, breech delivery, twin delivery – especially problems related to second twin, vacuum and forceps delivery, eclampsia: diagnosis and treatment, dealing with complications of epidural anesthesia, resuscitation of the pregnant woman, trauma in pregnancy, resuscitation of the neonate, rare obstetric emergencies like pulmonary embolism or amniotic fluid embolism. The participant will also be trained is setting up his/her delivery ward in order to be able to deal with most common obstetric emergencies.

Depending on need, the training ranges from half a day to two-day interactive sessions where skills will be trained in scenario settings. Scenarios can be altered and differentiated according to the participant’s experience so that maximum learning benefit can be obtained. An entry exam and a considerate amount of self-study are also part of the requirements. After completion of the course the participant will receive an HPCZ recognized certificate. This course is based on international standards (ALSG, UK advanced Life Support Group  https://www.alsg.org/home). Our emergency obstetric course will not only upgrade the participant’s practical skills but will also provide essential knowledge on how to prepare his/ her obstetric ward for these emergencies.

Being able to correctly interpret a CTG (Cardiotocography for fetal monitoring) will make the health care worker more competent in recognizing fetal distress and hence improve neonatal outcome on his/her workplace. CTG is not routinely being practised in Zambia and is not part of the general training of most obstetric health care workers, but its basics can be easily obtained from our half day interactive course. Our CTG course will be beneficial for all health care workers that operate in an obstetric setting: resident and specialized gynecologists, midwives and general doctors engaged with maternal health. After completion of the course the participant will receive an HPCZ recognized certificate. Up to two months after completion of the half day interactive course session, the participant will have the opportunity to ask for feedback from the course directors when encountering challenges in reading CTG at his/her workplace. In that way the participant will solidify his/her newly gained knowledge to the maximum. An entry exam and a considerate amount of self-study are also part of the requirements.
